OLDER DRIVERS: What we know that can save lives
Our Village Volunteer Tara Kelley-Baker works as a researcher for the Automobile Association of America Foundation for Traffic Safety, a research organization focused on understanding driving risks and promoting traffic safety. Her research has included a number of studies involving older drivers and road safety. She will share what she has learned and help separate the facts from the myths about older drivers. She also will provide tips on mitigating risks associated with older drivers. If you still get behind the wheel, this is one presentation you should consider attending.

Join other Village members for a neighborhood walk on a slightly chilly pre-spring morning. Meet at 4th and M at Farmers Market area. Walkers should:

1) have had at least their first vaccine shot at least 14 days prior to walking

2) where a face mask; and

3) maintain social distance.

We are continuing with the COVID precautions as we await CDC‘s guidance on the extent to which vaccinated persons can assemble in groups.

Carrol Quinn, the new Waterfront Village Board President, has a PhD in Nursing with an emphasis on care of the elderly and additional certification on social gerontology. She has taught nursing and graduate school sociology students on issues related to aging, has served on boards of agencies serving the elderly, including the Board of the Ohio Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Carroll has followed the developments of the national Village movement since its inception in Boston. She also volunteers for the Capital Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, co-facilitating the local monthly support group for caregivers of people affected by dementia and doing some legislative advocacy work.

During February, many of us tend to “love our hearts” by indulging in sweet treats, including pastries, candy and lots of chocolate. But for the long haul, one of the best ways to “love our hearts” is by eating a healthy diet; one that limits the sweets to special occasions and emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables and limited fats and carbohydrates in day-to-day eating. There are many ways that each of us build upon those basic guidelines, finding the recipes and diet plans that work for us.
In this session, we’ll spend some time talking about what “healthy eating” means to each of us and share some of our favorite healthy recipes. When you register for the program, please send a copy of the recipe you want to share. We will combine them into a handout to share with the group.

Waterfront Village Members are invited to attend a support group for those caring for loved ones managing Alzheimer‘s Disease on the fourth Thursday of each month (schedules will vary when the fourth Thursday is a holiday). Free and open to all. During COVID-19 restrictions these sessions are being conducted over Zoom. If you want to join the group, contact Carroll Quinn by email or phone number above and you will be sent information about a Zoom link. Extra support may be more important than ever during the challenges of caregiving during the pandemic! Please join us. Your RSVP is helpful in planning the meeting, but not required.
